Here’s a window into today’s solar activity: Starting at 00:00 UTC, and ending at 11:22 UTC on May 5, 2015, this video reveals a new sunspot region rotating into view (on our left) on the Sun. This region is already producing x-ray flares (bright flashes in this video). The video, images captured by NASA’s SDO spacecraft in two extreme ultraviolet wavelengths–304 and 171 Angstroms–shows this time line three times.
The coming week will be active with flares and possible coronal mass ejections.
