The SA Sprint Contest, is a ham radio competition that aims at improving the operating skills of its participants, and also provide the ground rules for a fun event by preventing stations from parking endlessly on a frequency throughout the operating time. We have based our rules on the long-term and well established NA Sprint. The NA Sprint, according to many people is: “…the most fun you can have in four hours with your clothes on..” N6TR dixit.
The SA Sprint is a joint effort of several South American Amateur Radio Clubs and Groups.
I – Participants: Licensed amateur radio operators from all over the world.
II – Objective: To contact as many participants as possible according to the rules of the contest.

- Single Operator SSB
- Single Operator Mixed Mode
- Multi Operator *
* Muti Operator stations can have only one transmitted signal at any given time. There are no restrictions to bands/modes changes though.
IV – Contest Date: Saturday, July 22nd, 2017.
V – Bands: 40 and 20 meters:
Suggested contest band portions
20 Mts CW: from 14020 KHz to 14075 KHz
20 Mts SSB: from 14120 KHz to 14190 KHz
40 Mts CW: from 7010 KHz to 7050 KHz
40 Mts SSB: from 7100 KHz to 7200 KHz
VI- Contest Time: From 20 to 24 UTC
VII – QSO / QSY: Stations must follow QSO/QSY rule.
- A station calling CQ, after completing a QSO must QSY ± 1 KHz to answer someone else’s CQ or at least ± 3 KHz to call CQ again.
- The station answering to someone else’s CQ, after completing that QSO can call CQ on that frequency and complete one additional QSO, after which the participant must follow the preceding QSO/QSY rule described in point 1 of this section.
- There are no limits to the bands/mode changes, however no simultaneous transmitted signals from a station are allowed at all times.
VIII – Power: The maximum allowed output power is 100 Watts measured at the output of the last amplifier stage for stations entering Low Power categories. High Power stations: more than 100 Watts output. This apply to both single and multi operator categories.
IX – QSO Points: 1 point per each valid QSO. A station can be worked once per band AND mode. Contacts between stations outside of South America are also worth 1 (one) point.
X – Multipliers: There will be two types of multipliers.
a) South American prefixes worked. Each prefix counts once regardless of the bands and modes.
b) Different countries worked according to the latest ARRL DXCC List. Each DXCC Country also counts once regardless of the bands and modes.
XI – Final Score: Sum of QSO point times the sum of multipliers worked.
Example: Final score = 100 QSO (100 Points) x (35 SA Prefixex + 50 Countries) = 100 x 85 = 8500 points.
XII – Contest Exchange:
- RS(T) + consecutive serial number starting by 001
- The serial number is consecutive regardless of the bands and modes. (One consecutive serial number per station log)
XIII – Valid Contacts: Contacts will be valid if:
- Times of QSO match in both logs ( ± 3 minutes)
- Frequencies match in both logs ± 1 KHz
- The copied callsign matches
- The copied RS(T) – matches
- The serial number matches
- For a station to count towards the QSO total for the contest result it must appear in at least two (2) of the contest logs received by the organizer.
XIV – Logs: Contest logs mus include the following information.
- UTC time of each QSO in four-digit format, e.g. 2030
- Frequency of each qso in four or five digit format depending on the frequency
- Complete callsign of each worked QSO
- RS(T) sent
- Three-digit serial number sent, e.g. 020
- RS(T) received
- Three digit serial number received, e.g. 050

The Cabrillo format for our contest is compatible with the CQ WPX Cabrillo specification, thus, a contest logging softwarte like N1MM, EI5DI, Win-Test, AA-Log, DXLog.net and many others can be used.

N1MM allows for selecting CQ WPX, SSB or CW to start and then change modes. The output will include both SSB and CW QSOs in the right format. We have asked the N1MM team the inclusion of our contest in their supported contest for N1MM+

There is no distance restriction for submitting your score in favor of a club. However, National organizations such as the JARL, ARRL, DARC, URE, REF, RCA, RCC, RCU, LABRE, etc are note eligible to enter this competition.
