Atol das Rocas
PY0R/PY7RP & PU0R/PU0FDN will be on the air from Atol das Rocas – IOTA SA-038 between 15 to 21 November. This is a rare IOTA DXpedition and also valid as PY0F DXCC for ARRL awards. The last operation was in 1992 and now it places the 3rd position in the most wanted IOTA groups in SA. The actual dates are estimate only since the operation depends on sea conditions.
The Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve is a brazilian conservation protection unity located about 144 nautical miles (267 kilometers) from the city of Natal in northeastern of Brazil and 80 nautical miles (148 kilometers) west from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (PYØF). This natural reserve was the first one created by the Brazilian Navy dated back in 1979. The Administration though is done by the “Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade” – Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. This institute is managed by the Brazilian Ministry of Envoirement.
The Atol das Rocas is the unique Atol in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, and its geology is formed by the same submerged chain of mountains from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. During high tide, only two islands are over the sea level, they are: Ilha do Farol (Light house Isl) and Ilha do Cemitério (Cemetery Isl.).
Nowadays the unique human activities permitted on the place are those related to scientific research i.e. no turism is permitted to avoid damage to the natural envoirement.
THE GOAL, PLANNING & STRATEGIES
First of all, it is important to know that we will be working on the mantainance of the Scientific Base Station.
There is a lot of work to do, and this get to be our 1st main goal.
We will try to be “on the air” as much as possible, but limited to non working time.
The station will be on the air for 7 days within November, 2015.
This activity has been waited for a long time by IOTA hunters around the world. Since the big silent window – 26 years – Off the air, the demand nowadays is pretty high, so a special strategy *must* be done to attend the ham community demand.
As a DXpedition team, our main goals are:
This DXpedition will happen within November 2015 and will last for 5 to 7 days. The duration will depend on a series of factors.
The primary estimated schedule is as follows (may change suddenly):
15 November Meet up in PY0F;
16 November Set sail for PY0R;
16 to 21 November Window of Operations (may begin later and/or QRT earlier);
22 November Set sail back to PY0F;
Due to limitations on baggage weight, energy main source & transportation we will be limited to low power operations (100 watts) only. Rigs must be light and relliable. Equipaments are:
– Transceivers: Icom IC-7000 & Yaesu FT-897D.
– Antennas: 1/4 full wavelenght antennas for 15m, 20m & 40m.
– Energy: Solar Powered panels and huge bank of batteries.
