Children are born atracted with buttons, lights and things that make noises. They may not speak yet, but if they see our equipments, their reaction is to turn or squeeze some button.
I believe the interest of Guilherme started by amateur radio in this moment. He was still in diapers, but was always in my station, playing with iambic key or turning the VFO.
So, I took advantage of his natural interest to teach him CW letters. I changed the sounds that we make when we are having dinner, like when we tinkle on a cup, to DADIDADI DADADIDA (CQ). Also, with every new country, I’ve shown him the location on maps and, everytime a new QSL card came home, I told him about it.
But then it came the age of videogames. How to compete with it? What worked with him was to find free time between his activities to study. I started to invite him to CW classes and listen to the radio. Then, I notice his interest about ham radio. I made the final question: “Do you wanna be an amateur radio?”. Without second thoughts, he answer: “I do”.
On the next day, I asked Labre-SP about it. They informed me what documents would be necessary and I arranged it. Three days after it, I got one e-mail telling me that the test would be in one week.
Guilherme studied hard, made the test and was approved in Ethics and Operational Techniques but, for one question, failled in Legistation. He was sad at the beggining but, after he got the news, asked if he could do the test again. I’ve sent one e-mail to Anatel and, he could repeat the test one month later – but this time the exam would be during his tests in school. We made a study schedule and, on September 15th, he did it again.
It was distressful to wait for the results, but in three days we got it: approved! We sent all the documentations asked to Anatel and, on october 14th, he got his call sign: PU2XCW.
May the amateur radio brings a lot of joy to my friend and grandson Guilherme, PU2XCW.
