A memorial for the 235+ that did not survive Katrina’s fury on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and points north August 29, 2005.
This operating event is being held to remember those who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina when it struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005.
Many lost everything they owned and many lost their lives. We also want to honor the hundreds of volunteers from all over the country that poured in to assist us in our time of dire need.
Operating activity will consist of stations along the coast of Mississippi using special K for Katrina 1X1 calls. Operations will begin at 00:00z on Aug 26thusing home stations. At 13:00 on Aug 29th, the time of Katrina impact, all stations will reduce power to 100 watts except for bonus stations, K5M and K5T. The reduced power operation will continue until 23:59 on September 2nd.
K5Z at ground zero will be a portable station QRP set up on the beach using temporary antennas and powered by emergency power.
