“You might recall the ARRL asking you to send a letter to your Congressman or woman asking them to support the Amateur Radio Parity Act. And you might further recall the ARRL asking you to actually send that letter to Headquarters so they can “hand deliver” it in Washington DC.
Meet the “hands.” And the feet.
Chris Imlay W3KD, ARRL’s General Council, and Mike Lisenco N2YBB, Hudson Division Director, are two of the ARRL hams who have been walking the halls of Congress, your letters in tow, meeting with Representatives and their staffs. Now they tell us just how important those letters have been in getting the attention of those Representatives (and, more often, their staffs).
Schoolhouse Rock (“I’m just a bill, up on Capitol Hill…”) teaches us that before a bill can become a law, it must be passed by both houses of Congress, the House AND the Senate. Before it can be PASSED, it has to be INTRODUCED. The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 crossed that milestone when Senate Bill 1685 joined House Bill 1301 in this year’s Congress. With that, it goes from being ‘wishful thinking’ to something that has a real chance to become law this year.
In this episode, Chris and Mike explain how that happened. They also fill in some history of PRB-1 that you might not have heard, discuss how our current FCC is far more focused on the Internet than anything that uses more than WiFi over-the-air (Amateur OR Broadcast), and reveal how the deed restrictions and HOA rules prohibiting your antenna are NOT a ‘private contract.’
Watch this episode, take some notes, and at your next club meeting when the President asks if anyone has anything to bring before the club, raise your hand… because you will.
