In a large shed off a gravel drive, several men gather around a radio. For 22 hours, they’ve been scanning the airwaves trying to make contact with other operators. Because of storms, though, they haven’t had much luck.
This time, that’s OK, because the amateur radio operators that comprise Katy’s Amateur Radio Society aren’t in any kind of emergency situation. Instead, they’re participating in the annual international Field Day for other radio operators who take to the airwaves for 24 hours and tally how many contacts they can make. Last year, the group fared much better, but it isn’t a supercompetitive bunch; so the lower count doesn’t seem to bother them.
