CARS will be celebrating St George’s Day with a /P event at Galleywood Common using the callsign GB1STG. Last year’s event was an informal gathering of “Essex Hams” and saw over 20 people descend upon the Common for some portable radio fun.
This year there will be 40m and 2m stations active plus the higher HF bands subject to conditions. This is an ideal chance to see how easy it is to set up an effective /P station. We will be running off 12v batteries and using fishing-poles and simple wire aerials. All are welcome, and there will be help and advice on equipment, aerials as well as the chance to use a special-event callsign in the sunshine.
Also, if you are thinking of trying out some “portable” this summer, the May CARS meeting sees Charlie M0PZT give us a talk on “Operating Portable”.
This event, supported by the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society, returns to Galleywood Common on Thursday 23rd April 2015. Any excuse to descend upon our favourite /P QTH and St George, slayer of dragons, is as good a reason as any.
The exact QTH is shown on this Google Map
We expect to be on-site around 9am for a 10am start – continuing as long as weather (and operators!) permit. As this is a “field” event we’ll be relying on battery power, lightweight kit and, of course, the British weather! If you’re interested in visiting, you’ll be most welcome – if you wish to operate and/or bring kit, please e-mail me m0pzt<at>m0pzt.com
